Irreversible tides is a set of works executed at different times and locations on the edges of the water to address urgent environmental concerns. Primarily, it highlights the eco-politics of water, emphasizing the need for local awareness of essential life-sustaining natural resources and actions on lifesaving critical issues.

On Dvaipayana delves into an intriguing tale from the sacred Puranas, exploring profound themes of life, death, submersion, and inundation as well as envisioning futures intertwined with water. The video was executed on the banks of Varanasi, opposite Tulsi Ghat and was inspired by the tale of Ved Vyasa: the legendary author of the renowned Indian epic, the Mahabharata.

The captivating essence of On Dvaipayana is elevated by the inclusion of two captivating photographs from the Anhedonic landscape series shot at estuaries which takes the conversation to the next level, bringing us to current culminations. It delves into the interesting world of alienation and disconnection, where even pleasure seems to be absent and affecting us at all levels. The Anhedonic Landscape draws our attention to this bareness that we have chosen to immerse ourselves in without realising it. With its breathtaking yet haunting imagery, it mirrors our present reality, revealing the wounds that have longed to be seen, acknowledged and addressed.

Bhalla’s work together forces us to reflect on our relationship with what and how we consume and constantly waste. By indicating the futures we may inhabit as we choose numbed by greed, narrow visions of community and a push towards unsharing of natural resources, the artist encourages us to contemplate the never-ending movement of rivers and seas that have sustained us so far but may not be so benevolent in the near future!

‘ऑन द्वैपायना’ पवित्र पुराणों में वर्णित एक दिलचस्प कथा है जिसमें जीवन, मृत्यु, जलमग्नता और बाण आदि के गम्भीर विषयों के अन्वेषण के साथ-साथ जल से जुड़े भविष्य को भी दृष्टिगत किया गया है। यह वीडियो वाराणसी के किनारे, तुलसी घाट पर निष्पादित गया था, और यह प्रसिद्ध भारतीय महाकाव्य, महाभारत के महान रचियेता वेद व्यास की कथा से प्रेरित था।

‘ईर्रिव्हर्सिबल टाईड्स’ का मन मोह लेने वाला तत्त्व ‘एनहेडोनिक लैंडस्केप’ शृंखला से ली गईं दो मनोरम तस्वीरों को शामिल करके उन्नत किया गया है जो संवाद को अगले स्तर तक ले जाता है, हमें वर्तमान परिणामों तक पहुँचाता है। यह अलगाव और वियोग की दिलचस्प दुनिया में लीन है, जहाँ आनन्द भी अनुपस्थित-सा लगता है और हमें लगभग सभी स्तरों पर प्रभावित करता है। ‘एनहेडोनिक लैंडस्केप’ हमारे ध्यान को इस सुनसानता की ओर ले जाता है जिसे हमने बिना साकार किए स्वयं को तिरोहित करने के लिए चुना है। अपनी लुभावनी लेकिन भूतिया कल्पना के साथ यह हमारी वर्तमान वास्तविकता को दर्शाता है, उन घावों को प्रकट करता है जो लम्बे समय से देखने, स्वीकार किये जाने और संबोधित होने की इच्छा रखते हैं।

अतुल भल्ला के कार्य हमें हमारे सम्बन्धों के साथ यह विचार करने पर मजबूर करते हैं कि हम क्या और कैसे उपभोग करते हैं और निरन्तर अपव्यय करते हैं। लालच, समुदाय की संकीर्ण दृष्टि और प्राकृतिक संसाधनों के बंटवारे की ओर एक धक्के के कारण हम जिस भविष्य को चुनते हैं, उस भविष्य को इंगित करके, अतुल भल्ला ने हमें नदियों और समुद्रों के कभी न समाप्त होने वाले आन्दोलन पर विचार करने के लिए प्रोत्साहित किया है जिसके अनन्त प्रवाह ने हमें अब तक बनाये रखा है लेकिन हो सकता है कि निकट भविष्य में ये इतनी उदार न रह पायें!
